How to Reduce Shedding in your French Bulldog.

Are you considering a Frenchie or Fluffy Frenchie but concerned about the shedding? Do you already have one and are trying to find out how to keep it to a minimum? This article is for you:

Genetics:

Buying a Frenchie with a double copy of the lowest shedding gene can definitely help which is why all of our puppies from the You Winnie Some Kennel have a double copy of the lowest shedding genes available for French Bulldogs. You can test your dog for shedding. The lowest result would be an n/n for the MC5R gene.

Regular Brushing:

For traditional French Bulldog coats, I recommend the Sleek Ez brush, they boast up to an 80% reduction in shedding. For the fluffy Frenchie coat, I prefer the Furminator brush. They are also famous for removing undercoat and any loose fur. Aim for at least a few minutes of brushing several times a week and this alone will make a huge difference.

Bath Time:

Bathes in general can really help, but as an added boost you may not have known about multipe companies make a “deshedding” shampoo and conditioner. They can dry out your pup’s fur so it is NOT for every wash, but you should see a ton of excess fur come off in the tub as you scrub and rinse. Just make sure you always follow with brushing.

Healthy Diet:

Ensure your dog's diet is well-balanced and provides the necessary nutrients for healthy skin and coat. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are particularly beneficial for coat health. We supplement salmon oil specifically for dogs to achieve this. As an added bonus their fur grows in softer.

Hydration:

Unless otherwise advised by a vet, your dog should have unlimited access to water. If your dog is dehydrated, this could increase shedding.

Regular Vet Checkups:

Visit your veterinarian regularly to check for any underlying health issues that could be causing excessive shedding. Allergies, skin infections, or hormonal imbalances can contribute to shedding problems.

Appropriate Temperature:

Keep your Frenchie in a comfortable temperature range. Excessive heat or cold can affect their skin and coat health, leading to shedding.

Deshedding Option:

If you need some extra help, you can actually bring your French Bulldog to your local groomers to have them deshedded professionally. This usually last about 2 months for French Bulldogs.

Additional Helpful Items:

Always have some lint rollers on hand and I’d recommend getting a robot vacuum to address any shed hair that does make it to your floor.

Follow these tips and you should see a huge difference in your French Bulldog’s shedding. Good luck!
