French Bulldogs in Redlands, CA - A Local Breeder’s Perspective

"What is it like to own a French Bulldog in a city like Redlands?”

Introduction

I realize this is somewhat of a weird topic, but I think our city has something special to offer for dog owners and I believe it is particularly attractive to French Bulldog owners. People talk about where to raise their kids. I would like to talk about where to raise your Frenchie. Here are some reasons I think Redlands takes the top city for frenchies in the Inland Empire.

Redlands Dog Park

Redlands has a beautiful dog park that has both a large and small dog park side. Frenchies are accepted on both sides. I believe the size limit is 30lbs for the small dog side. However, if your larger Frenchie plays gently people seem to be pretty accepting of any dogs on the border of this weight.

Our dog park is highly social. I know people who have met their significant other there. There are usually multiple frenchies there if you go at one of their busier times such as the evenings after its cooled down. I definitely don’t recommend, bringing your Frenchie there during the day since Redlands can get pretty hot. Your frenchies will struggle to keep up with the other dogs and potentially overheat if you go when its too hot. There is also not a ton of shade.

If your Frenchie isn’t one to play with other dogs, above the dog parks is a beautiful duck pond to walk your fur baby around. Just be sure not to let them fall in from chasing a duck. We’ve had a few close calls.

Redlands Downtown

You’ll see a lot of people walking their dogs downtown. Be prepared to be stopped a lot with a request to pet your dog especially with a Frenchie in hand. We have even gotten multiple requests for photos with or of our French Bulldogs. This is totally normal for this Redlands and no one is trying to be creepy. Take it as a compliment that they find your dog abnormally cute and what to show their friends. We especially get stopped when we bring our fluffy Frenchie Spiffy out. Many people haven’t seen a fluffy before so its something new to them.

Be sure to stop in at Tom and Hound the local doggie specialty store for a free treat and some water. Also, enjoy some coffee at any of the downtown shops. Most of them are dog friendly.

Coffee Shops

Stell’s is my number one dog friendly coffee shop recommendation. Its shaded outdoor patio with spaced tables is very dog friendly. They keep dog bowls outside on the patio at all times. Many locals like to bring the dog bowl to their table if they are the only one, so you may have to around until you find it. As an added bonus, they have my favorite sandwiches and salads in all of Redlands. Their shop is surrounded by a nice grassy area for your French Bulldog to relieve themselves.

Another great option is Olive Market. Olive market is especially kid friendly. So if you’re bringing your kid and dog, you’re in good company. They have a small playhouse in the back fenced patio (they do not allow dogs to roam freely in this area) and in the front is a free little library.

Restaurants

The best dog & kid friendly restaurant in my opinion is Luna Grill. They have an enclosed astroturf area in the back where kids can run around while you eat. We usually tie our frenchies below the table on the outside patio. The staff seems to really like dogs.

We just had a ton of brewery style dining open up and already had a few to begin with. Here is a list of these dog friendly restaurants are Septembers, J Riley Distillery, Hanger 24, Batter Rebellion, Eureka Burger, and Escape Craft Brewery.

Safety

Redlands is located within San Bernardino county which is known for its high crime, I know people do wonder if we feel comfortable walking an expensive dog like a French bulldog. The answer would surprise you. We do walk our frenchies in our neighborhood. Most neighborhoods in Redlands are low crime and safe enough to walk your French Bulldog. I cannot boast that all frenchies in San Bernadino county are safe, but I can speak to our neighborhood that we have been walking them for years with no issues. Always keep an eye out in any neighborhood waking your French bulldog since they can be a target for thieves.

Conclusion.

Redlands is not only a dog friendly city, but a French Bulldog friendly city. It is potentially the best place for French Bulldogs in San Bernadino county and one of the best places for French Bulldogs in the Inland Empire.
